I know I haven't been around much this week; it has been an odd one to say the least. Every university and K-12 in the city and eastern suburbs has been closed these last three days due to the wildfire tragedy. I've been home, watching a few movies and catching up on a lot of required reading. Yesterday, it was orange-brown again, and I had to turn on a light at midday in order to read. Today seems to be considerably clearer, but that's a bit like saying that having one's face next to a campfire is preferable to having it up a chimney.Barbara's neighborhood, which had been evacuated, was cleared to be reentered. Miraculously, though there was a 100-foot wall of fire not two blocks from her house, the fire swept through the hills of her neighborhood, never touching a house. Currently, the fire is "0% contained," but it continues to move eastward, away from the metro area. It is still causing plenty of damage. More than 90% of Cuyamaca was wiped out. The last county-wide stats I've heard had the tally at 13 people dead and 1,200 homes burned to the ground. Now I hear that a firefighter has died in the line of duty. What a sobering week.
